Social Media & Content Marketing in 2012

At the end of each year, we look behind us at the year that was and ahead to the year that will be. Now, I am not a huge fan of predictions – they are statements bravely made and rarely revisited. But I am ALWAYS interested in connecting the dots – in the broader trends that help us understand our behaviour a little better.

Crowdsourcing is an excellent way doing this.By focusing on the opinions of people with knowledge and expertise in a particular topic, you effectively create a prediction market. And prediction markets can be surprisingly accurate.

Each year, Joe Pulizzi and the Content Marketing Institute crowdsource ideas for content marketing in the year ahead. As a prediction market of ideas it can be a very useful way of generating ideas for your 2012 planning. Just make sure you cross-check with your own knowledge and business expertise. After all, the Future is a notoriously unpredictable place.

I wrote a great comment, hit “preview” and it disappeared. Oh well. Next time. :)

  2. Predictions are often made every new year and I agree, they are bravely made and rarely revisited. But most of the predictions in 2012 have shown visible signs of becoming a reality as early as now.
Whatever is new and interesting will always be a hit. But only the users will know which will stay long. I agree that people will look for something that will consolidate all the platforms that they are signed up with and just choose the ones they find interesting and important. Quality is always better than quantity. People will grow tired of signing in to different social media platforms and will look for an app or a platform thatwill enable them to sign-in to justone portal and access all their social media accounts.

  3. Thank you for sharing Gavin.
I recently heard that emails will be avoided nearly in the aim that “Bow mar homes said”! may be it is a prediction too :)

  4. In my opinion 2012 will be the year of social media and Google as we know Google has launched its own social networking site and its content is highly visible in Google search and also there is Pinterest the fastest growing social network right now.
